Buy Crypto in the US with Sparkling and Keep the Keys Yourself
Americans have no shortage of places to buy crypto. What most of those places keep is the coins: they stay in a custodial account until you ask to withdraw them. Sparkling is built for the next step, a wallet in your name where the agent prepares every trade and only your signature moves funds.
Ways to Buy Crypto in the United States
Most US buyers start on a regulated exchange or a payments app, and an increasing number then move what they bought into self-custody. Each route answers the same three questions differently: how you pay, who holds the coins and how much it costs in total.
| US exchange | Payments or brokerage app | Sparkling | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | ACH, wire or debit card | Linked bank or card | Crypto deposit, or card where offered |
| Who holds the coins | The exchange | The app, sometimes without withdrawals | You, in your own wallet |
| Moving coins out | Withdrawal request | Limited on some apps | Send any time from your wallet |
| How you trade | Order book or buy button | Buy button | A sentence to the agent or manual entry |
Rules That Apply When You Buy Crypto in the US
Companies that sell crypto for dollars in the US register with FinCEN as money services businesses and usually hold state money transmitter licenses; New York adds its own BitLicense. That is why the dollar step almost always involves an identity check.
- Identity verification is standard wherever you pay in dollars.
- Some states restrict which coins or services are offered to residents.
- Buying crypto with dollars is not a taxable event, but it sets your cost basis.
- Our app is open only to adults who are 18 or older.
Can You Buy Crypto in the US Without ID?
Not through regulated channels, and offers that promise otherwise are a common route to fraud. What Sparkling changes is the next step: signing in needs only an email, and once coins are in your own wallet, swapping them happens without opening another exchange account. Card payments, where available, go through a payment provider that runs its own checks.

Cost Basis and Form 1099-DA
The IRS treats crypto as property. Custodial brokers report sales on Form 1099-DA, with gross proceeds from 2025 and cost basis for assets bought from 2026, but trades made from your own wallet generally don’t appear on that form, so the records are yours to keep. Since 2025 basis is also tracked wallet by wallet rather than across all your accounts. Converting coins after you buy them is a taxable disposal, which our page on crypto swaps covers in more detail.
Risks to Know Before You Buy
Crypto prices can drop sharply, transfers sent to a wrong address are final, and balances in a self-custody wallet are not FDIC- or SIPC-insured. Sparkling shows the cost of every trade before you sign; what and when to buy is your decision, and nothing here is investment advice.
